A Wind Band is an ensemble composed of instruments from the wind family, percussion with a string bass or electric bass. On rare occasions, other non-traditional instruments may be added such as piano, harp, synthesizer or electric guitar.
In France, it is after the French revolution that the military orchestra develops. The National Conservatory of Music was born at this time. The idea is to "train artists necessary to the solemnity of the republican celebrations".
In 1815, the repertoire ceased to be entirely military.
In 1842, thanks to Adolphe Sax, the instrument making became industrialized, the instruments were less expensive and the development of wind bands accelerated. The invention of the saxophone and the piston contributed to this development.
These musical societies were created by workers. With the need to train musicians, the Concert Bandsgradually approached the music schools.
The scores of a Concert Band include original compositions, transcriptions or arrangements of orchestral compositions, light music and popular tunes. The standard Wind Band repertoire often contains marches.
During the 19th century, large ensembles of wind and percussion instruments existed mainly in the form of military bands and the works produced consisted mainly of marches. At that time few original works for wind band were composed. One of the first major scores for this ensemble was Gustav Holst's first suite in E major, written in 1909, which is considered a classic to this day. After Holst, a variety of British, American, Canadian and Australian composers wrote for the ensemble, including such contemporaries as Percy Grainger, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Alfred Reed and Clifton Williams.
Today's wind bands are mainly made up of amateur musicians. At a time when individualism is on the rise, these musical societies continue to forge links among all strata of the population, bringing together young and old, workers and notables.
