"Quartet pieces were originally written for the enjoyment of amateur musicians. Sometimes simple in writing, sometimes more complex, they can sometimes be heard escaping from the window of a conservatoire, here and there. The idea was to bring them together here for everyone to enjoy.
My intention in proposing these quartet pieces is not to swell the ranks of the 'avant-garde rearguard', nor to revolutionise twenty-first-century music, which has undergone so many revolutionaries that we sometimes no longer know to which saint it belongs. This is simply the music of today, blending the harmonies of our time with the counterpoint of the past.
"Luna" contrasts with "Baba Yaga". This score is all contemplation through the melancholy cello solo, which is accompanied by the remaining trio on an ostinato of quarter notes.
The violin I/II/Alto trio is suitable for 1st cycle students. Only the solo cello part should be played by a 2nd cycle student.
William Sheller was born in Paris in 1946.
He left school at 16 to study harmony, fugue and counterpoint with Yves Margat (himself a personal pupil of Gabriel Fauré), followed by composition and orchestration. He turned to pop music after hearing the Beatles. Since then, he has enjoyed a successful career both as a classical composer and as a pop singer. His works often blend the two genres. For example, some of his songs feature carefully crafted orchestral passages (the baroque introduction to The New World) as well as instruments that are rarely found in pop music (such as a horn in Mirrors In The Mud and a clarinet in Fier et fou de vous).
On the other hand, his score Lux Aeterna is written for orchestra, a choir and rock band. He has toured́ several times with transcriptions of his songs for voice and symphony orchestra, as well as for voice and piano quintet. In addition, he has also written three symphonies, a trumpet concerto, film music, songs and arrangements for other artists (Dalida, Barbara ... etc.) He is, among other distinctions, Commandeur des Arts et lettre and Médaille de vermeil de l'Académie Française.
