This is an extract from the soundtrack to the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast. This piece is an adaptation for brass quartet of the film's title song, sung in English by Angela Lansbury (actress and singer, heroine of "Arabesque") and in French by Céline Dion.
Alan Menken, the composer, is an American born in 1949. He has written or co-written no fewer than 5 different soundtracks, including 'Hercules' and 'Aladdin', to name but a few of the most famous.
Sylvain Mendes began his musical apprenticeship in Vireux-Wallerand (08), where he learned to play the trumpet with André Grosjean. In 1988, he took his first lessons in orchestral conducting, orchestration and composition with Maurice Faillenot. He then joined the Harmonie Municipale de Fumay and perfected his training with Mr Auguste Masson.
He began his career as an arranger in 1999, arranging the soundtrack to the film Star Wars Episode 1 for the Orchestre d'Harmonie. He then moved on to conducting at the ENMD in Charleville-Mézières with Dan Mercureanu and writing with Antoine Jonet. He then joined the Reims CRR in the conducting class of François-Xavier Bilger and Rut Schereiner.
Since then, he has produced a number of compositions and arrangements for small ensembles, junior instrumental ensembles and wind bands, notably in 2011, when he wrote, scripted and directed a live musical show about the Ardennes department: "Arduinna, Déesse des forets profondes" ("Arduinna, Goddess of the Deep Forests").
